TMJ & Jaw Pain in Chicago
How We Help TMJ & Jaw Pain!
The temporomandibular joints, commonly called the TMJs, connect the lower jaw to the skull and allow the jaw to move during chewing, speaking, yawning, and other everyday activities. Problems involving these joints and the surrounding muscles are often referred to as temporomandibular disorders, or TMD.
TMJ-related symptoms can include jaw pain or tenderness, clicking or popping, tightness in the jaw muscles, difficulty opening the mouth comfortably, headaches, facial discomfort, and pain while chewing. Symptoms may be influenced by several factors, including jaw clenching or grinding, muscle tension, joint irritation, injury, stress, or dental and bite-related concerns.
At Progressive Acupuncture Wellness Center in Lincoln Park, we provide acupuncture and complementary therapies that may be incorporated into a broader TMJ and jaw pain care plan to help manage discomfort, muscle tension, stiffness, and limitations in comfortable jaw movement.
Because jaw pain can develop for many different reasons, care should be individualized based on your symptoms, jaw mobility, muscle tension, health history, dental history, daily habits, and other contributing factors.
Acupuncture, massage, acupressure, and other complementary approaches may be incorporated to help manage discomfort and tension in the muscles surrounding the jaw, face, head, and neck. Physical therapy may also be appropriate when movement, muscle function, posture, or rehabilitation needs to be addressed.
Cold Laser Therapy may be considered as part of care for selected musculoskeletal pain conditions. Cupping may be used for surrounding neck and shoulder muscle tension when appropriate rather than directly over the jaw joint itself.
Complementary therapies should not be described as mechanically realigning the jaw, correcting a person's bite, repairing structural joint damage, or replacing necessary dental or medical treatment. Persistent or significant TMJ symptoms may require evaluation by a dentist, physician, or other appropriate healthcare professional.

WHAT OUR PATIENTS ARE SAYING
How Can TMJ & Jaw Pain Affect Daily Life?
TMJ and jaw pain can interfere with activities that depend on comfortable jaw movement. Persistent symptoms may affect eating, speaking, sleeping, concentrating, and other everyday activities.
TMJ disorders and jaw pain may be associated with:
- Jaw pain or tenderness
- Clicking, popping, or grinding sensations
- Limited or uncomfortable jaw movement
- Difficulty chewing certain foods
- Facial or jaw muscle tension
- Headaches associated with muscle tension
- Ear-area discomfort
- Jaw fatigue with prolonged talking or chewing
- Sleep disruption related to discomfort or jaw clenching
- Difficulty comfortably completing everyday activities
Jaw pain should be appropriately evaluated because symptoms around the jaw and face can have several possible causes. Dental problems, tooth infections, grinding or clenching, joint disorders, muscle-related pain, injuries, headaches, and other conditions can sometimes produce overlapping symptoms.
Seek prompt medical or dental evaluation for severe or rapidly worsening pain, significant facial swelling, fever, suspected infection, significant injury, inability to open or close the mouth normally, a jaw that becomes locked, new facial weakness or numbness, or other concerning symptoms.
At Progressive Acupuncture Wellness Center, complementary care may be incorporated into an individualized plan focused on helping manage discomfort, muscle tension, mobility, and overall function while working alongside appropriate dental or medical care when needed.
