Tailbone Pain in Chicago
How We Help Tailbone Pain!
Tailbone pain, also known as coccyx pain or coccydynia, is discomfort that occurs around the coccyx at the very bottom of the spine. Because the tailbone helps support the body while sitting, irritation in this area can make prolonged sitting and certain everyday movements uncomfortable.
Tailbone pain may develop following a fall or direct impact, prolonged sitting on a hard surface, repetitive pressure, pregnancy or childbirth, surrounding muscle tension, or other factors. In some cases, the cause may not be immediately apparent.
Symptoms can include localized pain and tenderness around the coccyx, discomfort while sitting or transitioning between sitting and standing, and pain during activities that place additional pressure on the area.
At Progressive Acupuncture Wellness Center in Lincoln Park, we provide acupuncture and complementary therapies that may be incorporated into a broader tailbone pain care plan to help manage discomfort, surrounding muscle tension, stiffness, and mobility limitations.
Because tailbone pain can have different causes, care should be individualized based on how the symptoms began, the location and severity of discomfort, sitting tolerance, mobility, health history, and other contributing factors.
Acupuncture and complementary therapies may be incorporated into a broader approach focused on helping manage discomfort and surrounding muscle tension. Physical therapy may also be appropriate when rehabilitation, movement, strength, or surrounding pelvic and musculoskeletal function needs to be addressed.
These therapies do not mechanically reposition the coccyx, remove calcification, or repair a fracture or other structural injury. Persistent or significant tailbone pain may require medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause.

WHAT OUR PATIENTS ARE SAYING
How Can Tailbone Pain Affect Daily Life?
Tailbone pain can be especially disruptive because sitting is part of so many everyday activities. Persistent discomfort may affect work, driving, travel, exercise, sleep, and other routine activities.
Tailbone pain may be associated with:
- Localized pain or tenderness around the coccyx
- Discomfort during prolonged sitting
- Pain when transitioning from sitting to standing
- Discomfort while driving or traveling
- Difficulty finding a comfortable sitting position
- Surrounding muscle tension or stiffness
- Reduced tolerance for exercise or certain movements
- Difficulty completing seated work comfortably
- Sleep disturbances related to discomfort
- Reduced comfort during everyday activities
Persistent tailbone pain should be appropriately evaluated, particularly when it begins after a significant fall or injury. An evaluation can help distinguish soft-tissue irritation from a fracture, joint-related problem, referred pain, or another condition affecting the region.
Seek prompt medical evaluation for severe pain following a significant injury, new numbness or weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the groin or saddle area, fever or other signs of infection, unexplained weight loss, or pain that is severe, progressive, or otherwise concerning.
At Progressive Acupuncture Wellness Center, complementary care may be incorporated into an individualized plan focused on helping manage discomfort, muscle tension, mobility, and overall function while working alongside appropriate medical care when needed.
